Automatic determination of runway edges in poor visibility conditions

چکیده
The automatic detection of runway hazards from a moving platform under poor visibility conditions is a multifaceted problem. The general approach that we use relies on looking at several frames of the video imagery to determine the presence of objects. Since the platform is in motion during the acquisition of these frames, the first step in the process is to correct for platform motion. Extracting the scene structure from the frames is our next goal. To rectify, enhance the details and to remove fog we perform multiscale retinex followed by edge detection on the imagery. In this paper, we concentrate on the automatic determination of runway boundaries from the rectified, enhanced, and edgedetected imagery. We will examine the performance of edgedetection algorithms for images that have poor contrast, and quantify their efficacy as runway edge detectors. Additionally, we will define qualitative criteria to determine the best edge output image. Finally, we will find an optimizing parameter for the detector that would help us to automate the detection of objects on the runway and thus the whole process of hazard detection.

متن کاملRollout and Turnoff (ROTO) Guidance and Information Displays Effect on Runway Occupancy Time in Simulated Low-Visibility Landings
This report examines a rollout and turnoff (ROTO) system for reducing the runway occupancy time for transport aircraft in low-visibility weather. Simulator runs were made to evaluate the system that includes a head-up display (HUD) to show the pilot a graphical overlay of the runway along with guidance and steering information to a chosen exit. Fourteen pilots (airline, corporate jet, and resea...
متن کاملMULTI-OBJECTIVE MATHEMATICAL MODELING OF AIRCRAFT LANDING PROBLEM ON A RUNWAY IN STATIC MODE, SCHEDULING AND SEQUENCE DETERMINATION USING NSGA-II
Runway length is usually a critical point in an airport system so, a great interest has been created for optimal use of this runway length. The most important factors in modeling of aircraft landing problem are time and cost while, the costs imposed on the system because of moving away from target times have different performances in terms of impact. In this paper, firstly, aircraft landing pro...
متن کاملContrast Enhancement in Poor Visibility Conditions Using Guided Filtering
In this paper, extraction of atmospheric veil is proposed to enhance the contrast of the images captured under poor visibility conditions. The method based on guided filtering can accurately recover hidden edges, maintain structural similarity to input image and it is effective for both color and gray level images. The proposed algorithm works without prior information about the scene and its c...
متن کاملTERPS REVIEW Low Visibility Operations
I TOUCHED BRIEFLY ON THE evolution of runway visual range (more commonly known as “RVR”) in my article about approach light systems (“Lights, Camera, Action!” August IFRR). This article discusses low-visibility operations and the differences between visibility and RVR, both from the regulatory and operational viewpoints. Because some readers make their living by flying under “for-hire” rules, I...
